Distance vs time. Acoustic and articulatory consequences of reduced vowel duration in Polish

چکیده
This paper presents acoustic and articulatory (ultrasound) data on vowel reduction in Polish. The analysis focuses the question of whether change formant value unstressed vowels can be explained by duration-driven undershoot alone or there is also evidence for additional stress-specific mechanisms that systematically affect formants. On top expected durational differences between stressed conditions, duration manipulated inducing changes speech rate. observed formants are compared to derived from midsagittal tongue different conditions. results show space reduced size raised vowels. Most spectral duration, but an systematic effect F1-lowering non-high does not follow movement. proposed interpretation Polish behaves largely as predicted model reduction, enhanced low vowels, potentially a stress marking strategy which involves raising fundamental frequency.

Acoustic and articulatory manifestations of vowel reduction in German
Recent phonological approaches incorporate phonetic principles in the motivation of phonological regularities, e.g. vowel reduction and neutralization in unstressed position by target undershoot. So far, evidence for this hypothesis is based on impressionistic and acoustic data but not on articulatory data. The major goal of this study is to compare formant spaces and lingual positions during t...
متن کاملArticulatory and acoustic correlates of the mid-central vowel
This paper reports on the articulatory and acoustic correlates of the mid-central vowel (schwa) in an attempt to find out the perimeter of this vowel in both the articulatory and acoustic vowel space of female American English speakers. F1xF2 plots were used to determine the acoustic vowel space. The articulatory vowel space was determined by plotting the maximum vertical displacement of the ja...
متن کاملVowel duration in pre-geminate contexts in Polish
The study presents Polish experimental data on the variability of vowel duration in the context of following singleton and geminate consonants. The aim of the study is to explain the low vocalic variability values obtained from "rhythm metrics" based analyses of speech rhythm. It also aims at contributing to the discussion about current dynamical models of speech rhythm that contain assumptions...
متن کاملA brief history of articulatory-acoustic vowel representation
This paper aims at following the concept of vowel space across history. It shows that even with very poor experimental means, researchers from the 17 th century started to organize the vowel systems along perceptual dimensions, either articulatory, by means of proprioceptive introspection, or auditory. With the development of experimental devices, and the increasing knowledge in acoustic and ar...
متن کاملReduced acoustic and electric integration in concurrent-vowel recognition
The present study used concurrent-vowel recognition to measure integration efficiency of combined acoustic and electric stimulation in eight actual cochlear-implant subjects who had normal or residual low-frequency acoustic hearing contralaterally. Although these subjects could recognize single vowels (>90% correct) with either electric or combined stimulation, their performance degraded signif...
